The Early Years
In 1947, Arch Batjer and Ralph St. John founded Batjer & St. John, a heating and air conditioning service company located in Abilene, Texas. In it’s early years, the company focused solely on residential service and operated out of their location at 765 Hickory St. With modest success and an opportunity for growth, the partners hired a mechanical engineer, Frank E. Peck, to pursue the commercial and industrial markets. In 1957, Batjer & St. John became Batjer & Associates upon the retirement of Mr. St. John and partnering with Frank E. Peck, Larry Pursley and Wiley Connally. Soon after, the company grew significantly with the addition of a pluming division of 25 individuals headed by Jack Pursley in 1960 and hiring Jim Jennings in sales.
Batjer & Associates expanded through the 1970s by taking on projects across West Texas from Abilene to San Angelo, Midland, Odessa and Del Rio. Frank E. Peck was named President of the company upon the passing of Arch Batjer in 1976, and existing partners included Lewis Chase, Jim Jennings, Clint Ferrell and Mike Denny. The company began the new decade with a concentration on commercial and industrial projects. Frank P. retired in 1986, leaving Jim J. as president, Lewis C. and Clint F. as vice-presidents and Mike D. as secretary-treasurer. By the end of the decade, Batjer & Associates had grown to 50 employees. The 1990’s proved to be a decade of steady growth and change for Batjer, with 89 employees and a move to the present location at 2825 Pine Street. In 1998, Mike D. assumed the role of president upon the retirement of Lewis C. and the passing of Clint F. and Jim J. The new millennium introduced Batjer Service, under the leadership of Mark Sutphen. Batjer Service does both residential and commercial retrofits, service and maintenance.
Batjer continues to serve area clients through its commercial and residential service divisions, Batjer & Associates and Batjer Service, respectfully. The companies are dedicated to enhancing its business procedures by utilizing the most reliable products and applying the latest advancements of the heating and cooling industry focused on helping customers save on energy costs. To better serve customers, Batjer introduced Service Plus, an affordable service inspection program developed to ensure that customers’ systems perform at peak levels year-round.
